Hookah Bowls: Assembly Techniques, Types, and Functions
How to properly assemble a hookah bowl? First, you should understand the purpose and function of a hookah bowl. The hookah bowl is the container for tobacco, used in conjunction with a chimney-type heating device (where hot charcoal is placed). It is the most important factor in the interaction between the hookah and tobacco. If the hookah tastes bad, is harsh, or produces insufficient smoke, there is a 99% chance that the problem lies in the assembly of the hookah bowl, or the combination of the hookah bowl, heating device, and tobacco.
What types of hookah bowls are there?
There are two main types of hookah bowls.
The classic perforated hookah bowl, used with a classic heating device.
There is also a single-hole hookah bowl called the funnel-shaped hookah bowl.
Funnel-shaped Hookah Bowl
Unlike the traditional perforated bowl, the funnel-shaped bowl has only one large hole in the center. When using a funnel-shaped bowl, the tobacco is evenly distributed around the hole, ensuring complete unobstructed flow. This differs from the traditional perforated bowl, where the tobacco is loosely distributed through multiple small holes. Funnel-shaped hookah bowls can also be used alone with a heat management device. These devices are typically lidded accessories for holding charcoal briquettes—like our Q Bowls.
How to fill a hookah bowl?
Unfortunately, there are no hard and fast rules. Many factors significantly influence the interaction of all the components:
What is the heat resistance of the desired tobacco?
What is the distance between the bowl and the heat management device?
What is the size of the hookah charcoal?
All these factors are important. But one thing is certain: practice makes perfect.
On average, a hookah bowl holds 15 to 20 grams of tobacco. This depends entirely on the bowl’s design and the flavor you want. There’s a trick called “overloading,” which involves intentionally stuffing the bowl with more tobacco for a stronger flavor. However, the line between delicious and burnt is very delicate. Too much tobacco will be closer to the charcoal and therefore more easily heated. This can easily lead to a burnt flavor. It’s best to experiment and find what works best for you.
Is there a “best” hookah bowl? Actually, there isn’t one, but if you’re looking for a versatile hookah bowl suitable for all types of tobacco, we recommend a perforated hookah bowl with a standard chimney-style heating element.
What is the role of charcoal?
Of course, charcoal is one of the most important factors. Remember, the larger the charcoal, the more heat it transfers to the tobacco. Charcoal blocks are typically between 25 and 28 millimeters in size. Generally, three charcoal blocks are used, placed separately in the bowl or heating element (Q Bowls). The size of the charcoal blocks has a significant impact. You can place the charcoal blocks closer to the center of the bowl or further out. The closer the charcoal is to the center, the more heat it provides to the tobacco. If the charcoal is too large, you may not be able to place it far enough away, resulting in incomplete combustion and a bitter or burnt taste. When using a heating element, you can choose three small charcoal blocks or two large charcoal blocks. Again, it’s best to experiment to find the optimal smoking experience and determine which combination works best for your device.
